I am going for a girl’s night in party (we are all SAH moms) and I want to bring a bottle of wine. It's a potluck dinner so what do you think would go well.

Please be specific and something I can pick up at the grocery store on the way there.

I can drink wine with the best of them but I know nothing about it.
THANKS in advance. 10pts. to the one that I end up taking to pick so give me a good description please.

I'm not really fishing for points, but I would like to share my favorite wines.

If you are looking for a good red, either Cabernet Savignion or Merlot, try Robert Mondavi "Woodbridge". Not too spendy, easy to find at any store, and it is a delicious wine.

If you are looking for a nice white wine, I prefer a sweeter white. Try Fetzer Gewertzermeiner (please look up the spelling, I think I sabatoged the spelling). It is a lovely wine in my opinion. Again, not a very spendy wine, and can be found in any grocery store.

Hope those help! Have fun!

If you want to impress... take some Tempranillo or Cabenet Sauvignon from Ribera del Duero. Try some Arzuaga, Pesquera, Guelbenzu, La Planta, El Vinculo. From Rioja, Spain Marques de Caceres, Alba de Beton. Maybe from Chile, some Underraga, Casillero del Diablo, Montes or Miguel Torres who also have one of the best Sauvignon Blanc. Something more expensive, Jordan, Duckwood. ($20-$55 per bottle)

Nice and cheaper Kedall-Jackson Collage, Anima and Ridge... Nice chardonnays from Califormnia. Actually almost all Napa Valleys and Sonoma Chardonnays are very good, well-balanced acidity, fruit bodied and nice legs.

I once worked at a liquor store here in South Carolina, and a couple came in one evening looking for something to celebrate their first anniversary with. The wanted to know what the 'best' wine was. My boss had a perfect opportunity to sell them a REALLY expensive bottle of wine that we had, but his reply has stuck with me for nearly 17 years... the best wine is the one that YOU like!! And I, being a gin or tequila drinker usually, tend to go for the sweeter wines, the less expensive ones. I like Reunite, everything from the heavy Lambrusco to the light, refreshing D'Oro. They also have the flavored wines that are great in the summer with fruit and cheese and crackers, like the Blackberry Merlot, the Peach Zinfandel, etc.. Hope you girls have a great time!!! I love pajama parties with grown-ups!!

I'd second Carly on the Fetzer Gewurztraminer. It is light, fruity, a bit sweet, smells wonderfully like flowers, and very few people know about it. I have served dozens of bottles of it at pot lock dinners as the wine to sip with fruit and cheese beforehand while we wait for everyone to get there. People who haven't every heard of it like it at first sip.

Call the grocery store ahead of time and ask them to put a bottle in the chiller for you, if they don't have it chilled. Most stores have a much smaller selection in the cold case than on the shelves. In California, Fetzer GW is one you can almost always find in the chiller.

The best wine is, as another poster said, the wine you like the best. That in turn depends on several things. Your question is too vague. You should have said

"We're having "---" as the main course, most of us like {red, white, rose} and I have about "$---" per bottle to spend."

Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel are all nice wines. If the main course is sole almandine, however, or fresh mussells steamed just until their shells open, any bold red wine would be a disaster. If it is to be spaghetti with red sauce and lots of garlic, a bold red wine would be perfect.

These are my personal favorites in the "grocery store" price range. They run $5 to $10 per bottle in California, depending on the store and what's on sale.

Brands: Fetzer, Wodbridge, Brrringer, Beaulieu "Costal".

Varieties:
Lamb, beef, pasta with red sauce; Cabernet, Merlot, red Zinfandel. (They also make a white zinfandel, which is really pink, which is slightly sweet and a good choice for people who don't drink much.)

Sea food; Sauvignon blanc or Chardonnay

Chicken; Chardonnay again, or merlot.

Pork is a tough one. There aren't any good pinot noirs in that price range. Gamay beaujolias, sometimes sold as just beaujolias, works well.

Three bottles - the Guwertz, a white zinfandel and a merlot - should make everyone happy and cover all the bases. I get the impression everyone in the group is still learning about wine. If someone in it is a real wine buff, ask her, but make it clear you don't want to know what SHE likes best, you want to know what she thinks most of the people in the GROUP would like best, given the main course. It makes a difference.

I have always found the a good Zinfindel -like 'BERINGER' - is good. You might take a White Grinache as a second bottle. Any wine made by Beringer is excellent. Pete

red wine, anything with Shiraz in it is easy to drink.
you must take the cork out in the morning to drink it that night.
otherwise buy white wine, perhaps a Riesling
