The reasons why adolescents try drugs are many and have already been answered by the others. Addiction however is the same in adults and adolescents and it is the same reason people like sex.
Addictive chemicals (e.g. cocaine, nicotine, amphetamines, marijuana) have neurochemical properties in your brain. They all can stimulate receptors for dopamine in your brain. These are the same receptors that make you feel fantastic during sex for example.
Opiates cause a different type of addiction though. Over a long period of time they will decrease the natural opiates your body would release and decrease the amount of opiate receptors in your body. This decrease makes one need more and more of the pain killer. This type of psuedo-addiction is known as "tolerance" and occurs in many people taking pain medications (e.g. Rush Limbaugh, who is not an addict, he just became tolerant).

The need to fit in with peers. Also if there are a lot of problems and pressures at home drugs help hide the problems. It is a feel good sorta thing. If you know someone with a drug problem, please get them help! It will not go away. I know as my daughter comitted suicide with drugs.
