AVG Free Edition works for me wonderfully.
Don't go with Spybot Search and Destroy it's great for detecting spyware but NOT viruses. You'll still need extra protection for that.

AVG free edition...you can download it from www.download.com, theres regular updates available as well,
i find this works well on my pc...along with spybot S & D, you can get that there as well...both freeware...,
