PUTU is right. Most of the times marriage alliance were actually political alliances. And As Kings were powerfull Priests Delared it to be OK for Kshatriyas.
But Ideal was alwys one wife only. Rama is respected for not marrying again under any circumstances.
The Hindu marriage ceremony it is one of the oaths that now you will not see other woman with this intent.
next vow is that you will give all your earning to her .
and so on...
Only when you say yes to all that Bride says she will be your wife. If you brake your end of promise you really can not claim her faithfullness, if you look at it this way.

polygamy is a crime as under the hindu marriage act today. hindu kings had more than 3 wives in order to maintain peaceful relations with their neighbouring kings as we all know that war was a costly affair. and through marriage they entered into a relationship not only with the wife but also her immediate family secondly due to poor medical facilities and lack of knowledge infant deaths and death at the time of birth being high they needed an heir to secure the kingdom from enemy kings.

The law on this topic is not a question of religion, it's of the state you are living in.
Not even all muslim countries would allow this - and when, then only under the condition that you are able to care for all your women!
Think about the income you would need to satisfy more than one woman...

Ancient kings just wanted to have fun I guess. But..think about this. Do you REALLY want 3 women telling you what to do?

Yes I agree with "PUTU".
having more than one wife by kings was not due to religion but due to politics.
