The main reason deforestation is occurring is the need (perceived) for more agricultural land. Deforestation is practiced to make way for cattle raising and agriculture, especially in the tropical rainforests of South America and Southeast Asia, but also in parts of western Europe and North America. Deforested land often falls prey to unsustainable agricultural practices--monoculture, use of pesticides, no crop rotation--which then fuels the need to clear even more trees for more land. Deforestation is occurring at such a rapid pace that if the current rate continues, the rain forests will disappear by the year 2100, and with them more than half of the animal and plant species on the planet. Nearly 40 million acres of natural forests were destroyed per year during the 1990s, and from 1990 to 1995 alone, a total area of forest nearly twice the size of Italy vanished.
Deforestation threatens the existence of every living thing on the planet. The world's tropical rainforests as well as the dry forests are extremely valuable ecosystems that contain more than 60 percent of the world’s plant and animal life.
Forests are critically important, as they help prevent an increase in global warming by serving as carbon sinks—areas that trap and store carbon dioxide. Trees absorb the gas from the air and then replenish the air with oxygen. The more trees we have, the better the air.

Preventing deforestation is also critical because forests help protect coastal regions, control avalanches and desertification, stabilize sand dunes, and prevent soil erosion and degradation.

Yup. Man does it, and leaves deserts where forests used to be.
Partly it's because we like to use the wood for making things like books, and newspapers and houses- partly we use the wood for fuel. Another issue is grazing land- a lot of people still eat meat, and intensive grazing methods mean that once cattle have used land, it often can't be grazed again, so the forest is cut down to make more space for grazing... Of course, in some wars defoliant chemicals were used to clear away forests and deprive enemy troops of cover, but this is probably more minor than the direct industrial effects above

Things like forest fires and drought occur from time to time of course, but this usally doesn't make the land completely infertile, and when the disaster is over, the mulch the dead plants left is perfect for more plants to grow.

This is why recycling what we have and reducing consumption is vital- anything that can reduce the amount of trees that die... the Sahara was once green farmland and woods- the Amazon could look like that in the future.

over population, landloss ,desertification ,expanding agriculture, and greed for wood are the main causes for deforestation

overpopulation ,this has doubled in the last 50 years a faster increase since we became homo sapian.

and so expanding populations are needing land for residences ,

but the bulk of deforestation is because of the subsequent expanding agriculture
,which due to landloss because of desertification is forced to devellop more and more new land for agriculture

and the need to grow food for 70 million more people that are on this planet every year.

also a big market for exotic wood does not help matters

cutting down of trees for use of land by man for his various purposes is called de-forestation...reasons may b different..like building of houses n flats n such stuff by claring d forests...n also 4 agriculture..n say for timber...paper....some times due to forest fires people r forced to cut down trees to avoid it frm spreading.Deforestation is the conversion of forested areas to non-forested. Historically, this meant conversion to grassland or to its artificial counterpart, grainfields; however, the Industrial Revolution added urbanization and technological uses. Generally this removal or destruction of significant areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity. In developing countries, massive deforestation has accompanied mankind's progress since the Neolithic, and has shaped climate and geography.

Deforestation (whether deliberate or unintended) is the result of the removal of trees without sufficient reforestation. There are many causes, ranging from extremely slow forest degradation to sudden and catastrophic wildfires. Deforestation can be the result of the deliberate removal of forest cover for agriculture or urban development, or it can be an unintentional consequence of uncontrolled grazing (which can prevent the natural regeneration of young trees). The combined effect of grazing and fires can be a major cause of deforestation in dry areas.

Greed. People who cut down trees to intensively farm some non-native crop for financial gain.

Greed. People who burn fuel without considering the consequences for the environment.

Greed. The USA.

It depends on the country. In developing countries it's caused by the need to farmland but the farmers don't know what they're doing. In the US it's caused by urban sprawl.

illegal logging, government building roads, fast food restaurants making cattle ranches (eg macdonalds), farming, lots of others but I can't remember!

For a logger to get to 1 mahogony tree in the rainforest, he would have to cut down 60 other trees. For making a road to get equiptment int the forest etc.

The greed of the logging companies and the unwillingness of governments to protect forests and have a sustainable trees policy.
