If everyone obeyed the Christian law of loving each other, treating others as you want them to treat you, then there would be no wars, no violence, everyone would have what they need. Everyone would share everything but mankind is a long way from all that. Nothing has changed in centuries and probably won't for centuries to come.

It's true that religion (any religion) is not perfect, but none the less religion is not the cause of evil, it's the people who twists the teachings of their own religion. I am a Christian but I do not believe in everything the Catholic Church teaches like nuns can't become preists and other issues. Karl Marx said that too "religion is the opium of the masses" but he was also quick to judge as you are. Whatever gives us hope is never bad, it's a good thing. Never be too quick to judge things or people you must have always a open mind. See what good religion can also bring, don't be like religion who sometimes closes it's eyes and refuses to hear what others say.

Well you must remember that religion is man made for him to profit, that's why the all he holy books have been re-written so many times, if you read the bible, it's very clear to see, I don't think religion is evil, but some of the people that follow it are, that's why there are suicide bombers, because their not allowed to make up their own minds, their religion is rammed down their throats from birth, so yes like so many on God's trail they get brainwashed and miss the truth.
What the most important thing to me is faith in God,
and the truth and you won't find it in religion

Religion gives people hope in a world where war and disease is everywhere. Admittedly it is the cause of most of the war and death but at the same time a world without hope is a very scary notion. Where do you think the idea of right and wrong came from?

Sadly, I thinnk there is much truth in what you say.
I do think there are many thousands of people who find religion a comfort, and who do not use it in a bad way.
But there have always been people with extreme views, and I agree that it is deluded to kill others in the name of a God.
Moral values are what matters.
Nothing wrong with posting a thought provoking questiion, especially on a Sunday! Hope you get a lot of thought provoking answers.

i'm not religious either, but i think some people need a THING,,,!?! whatever that might be, to believe in. This helps people peace of mind. I dont believe in a higher being.but i do believe that religion is very powerful and influencial to many poeple, and this is why people are influenced by evil doers in the world and are given distorted ideas on what religion is saying in the first place.religion has the ultimate power control, as so many people believe. For me one of the worst aspects of religion is guilt. ie if you dont believe you will be punished. This is wrong as it influences poeple. But i do think that religion gives people a framework to live by and for people who need to feel loved and wanted and a sense of belonging to something.

Religion is supposed to be about helping your fellow humans and other creatures of our planet and the universe. Sadly many people have a lot of hate within them for individuality and won't allow others to practice other religions than the religion they grew up with or the religion they chose to follow. I think if your religion tells you to kill people or to be intolerant to people of different faith you definitely have to ask yourself if it is not maybe a man-made religion used as a political weapon or for the gain of selfish power. Religion and tradition is much alike, it changes as you move from country to country and continent to continent. We call the same things with different names. Spirituality is what is important, religion is just the frame we choose to work in.

religion, in and of itself, can be very destructive. I don't do religion. I have been hurt so many times behind religious, pious Pharisees. I am involved in a personal relationship with my brother, Jesus, who died so that I might live. I have the greatest Dad, EVER....He is LOVE, though many people have done very bad things and said they did it in His name. He is The Almighty God, whose love overshadows all others. I also have a relationship with another fellow, sounds kind of mysterious, I know, but He is called the Holy Spirit. I know him better as my comforter, my guide, my teacher. That is truth. All other religious nuttiness that exalts itself above God is lie.

Religion is adapting a world view and living by it. God laid the foundations on which He planned for society to be based in the ten commandments and His word because he wanted what was best for all of us and he knew that in breaking these laws we would hurt each other, ourselves and him.God is love, is good, PERFECT and we were created in His image to be these things also.
However people have never kept these and therefore had to suffer the consequences of their sins in life and in death.
That was until Jesus came along. He was God with skin and therefore perfect, He died for all of our sins, the Lamb of God, sacrificed for Also that we could be saved and our wrongs made right in simply accepting His sacrifice..
This is where Christianity differs from all other religions in the world and is truly based on love. The only prerequisite to being made perfect in the eyes of God is to accept Jesus sacrifice, and believe that He is God in our hearts. If we believe this then He will work through us, enable us to be good and loving and deliver us from evil.
Every other religion is based on us having to acheive perfection through what we do ourselves, which is impossible.
God Bless you I hope you discover this truth for yourself

I believe it might be a disease. I think spirituality is a natural part of human existence, but religion (religious institution) is a cancerous version of it.
