LDS people are taught to pay a tithe on their gross income. However, the amount that someone tithes is entirely between them and God.

It is not your decision or an option. You pay 10 percent of your gross income...that's before taxes, insurance or anything. You also pay 10 percent on any other side income your family recieves. The more faithful you are in paying...the more you will never have to worry about your needs being met.

No one is forced to tithe, but they teach to pay on the gross income.

so funny story, recently I had to talk to my bishop I was not going to be able to tithe and pay for food so I tithed and they paid for food and diapers ... acually they helped more then I tithed, you are taught if you are faithful and tithe you will be taken care of and they took care of me acually i give the credit to heavenly father but tithing is optional

I believe it is a personal decision. I pay on the gross, I feel safer that way. :)
