When the French mathematician Nicholas Chuquet invented the system of million, billions, trillions, etc. in 1492, there was no America (Columbus hadn't set sail!) and no American system either.

In the long (British) scale, each new name has 6 more zeroes than the previous one, Thus 1 billion is 10^12 and is a million million. 1 Trillion is 10^18 and is a million billion. 1 Quadrillion is 10^24 and is a million trillion.

1 Quintillion = 10^30
I Sextillion = 10^36
1 Septillion = 10^42
1 Octillion = 10^48
I Nonillion = 10^54
1 Decillion = 10^60
and so on up to
1 Vigintillion = 10^120 (French word vingt = 20)

The American (short) scale came later and in it each new name is a thousand times the previous one. Thus 1 Billion = 10^9 = a thousand Million. 1 Trillion = 10^12 = a thousand Billion. 1 Quadrillion = 10^15 = a thousand Trillion.

1 Decillion = 10^33
1 Vigintillion = 10^63

A googol (10^100) is therefore larger than an American vigintillion but smaller than a British vigintillion.

A million is a thousand thousands on both scales. But thereafter they diverge,
