a very simple answer will be " psychological disability of infants and children , sometimes carried forward to adult hood". But there are too many variations. Some children even though brilliant are speech less. Autism can get combined with mental retardation and / or physical disability. In the most classic cases of autism the children are well formed attractive with speech disability. We find traces of autistic characters in mainstream persons also..... I hope I have not confused you.

autism is a state of illness affecting children.
it is a kind of monotonous behavior ,repetition ,sameness of behavior ,and poor association to others as family members.
usually of unknown cause with no precise therapy,
