The best thing to do when learning about people's cultures in my great experience is simply to watch documentaries. Reading books is an easy way to do so as well. Variety counts, but the news broadcasts are always the bad news anyway.

The news in the US is not a good place to learn anything, sorry.
I was in Iraq for a while and I noticed the only US news that was close to the truth was Fox news, but even they were biased. Don't worry the Iraq news was worse, but there was some news that was pretty accurate and unbiased. I don't remember what either one was called, but one was a middle Eastern news and another from Europe. Yes, if they weren't in English they did have English subtitle, but most were English.
No, I do not believe unbiased news is fair and if you want information on Islam why go to an anti site first. You should learn about it then go to an anti site, then find a true Islam to answer your questions.
I have read the Quran, but I understand other people not reading it. Why ask them to if they don't want to. It is easier and faster to do it my way then reading the Quran.
See just like the Christian Bible if you read it you could get very confused. It is better to have a decent knowledge of a religion before you read thier Holy book and if possible read it with someone of that religion with you. That way the person can explain any questions you have while reading it. Most religious people are more then happy to help you learn about thier religion.

The problems with believing all the media are first of all, they often hurry to get the "breaking news" without having all the information first. Many of the reporters don't fully research the story. Also, they may only be getting part of the story or one side of a story. I am not saying that you can't find out what's going on in the world by watching the news, but I have to question it's accuracy. So I agree that if one wants to know about anything they see on the news, it is advisable to study the subject from reliable sources.

No, News Channels is not the right way to learn about Islam.
I have see some people eager to learn and they do read books and visit good Islamic web sites.
Most of the people, take the shortest way,and think that the news channels are right, and some of them wants to think it is correct news...

(Regarding not to underestimate the number of stupid people around:)
LOLOL!!! Oh boy, you said it!!!
No, the news and anti-Islam sites are THE WORST places to learn about Islam. Oh yeah, and church is also not a good place either.
If one wants to learn about Islam, reputable sites and books about Islam are a great source. Why not visit your local mosque? There are discussions for the public there. I once went to a Qur'anic study at a mosque, and it was open to everyone, not just to Muslims.

well I would say never trust what TV shows; not even those Osama Binladin videos; and about Islam if you wanna know about it; just read Quran and you will know everything about it./....
I read Quran daily and check many websites about Islam.....and some of them are really bad but some are great.....
It is matter of fact that some people want to defame Islam...but then it is the faith that matters not those slogans aginst Islam, God knows what is good and fair, so let us keep doin our work and let media do it,

i have never read many books about islam, and i certainly wouldn't form an opinion about islam or any other religion based on what's in the news or websites with an ax to grind.
