If this is a true Hire Purchase agreement, and not a finance arrangement, then all you need do is cancel the hire of the vehicle. Hire Purchase means that you hire the car from the owner and then have an option to buy at the end of the term. Check your agreement, espescially the small print.

You can sell it privately and pay off the HP with the proceeds. There may be some shortfall for you to make up, especially if you did not put much of a deposit on the HP contract.

i've just been through all this with my zafira,
got a mobility car and called finance people to ask what i should do?
they said "unfortunately nothing?"
if you sell it your breaking the law,
if you stop making payments they re-posses and still want paying,
and i went for the hand it back option and im now being took to court for £10500 for a car that was oridginally £5500!!
best thing to do is keep car!!!!
