Very good. They are loving and playful and, if you get a short hair, they don't shed too badly.
You just have to be careful with his spine. For instance, you couldn't let a 2 year old sit on him. And you need to keep him from getting overweight as that causes back problems.
I've never met a mean tempered dachshund.

Well, Daschshund is a good pet, don't overfeed it though. My friend has one and it's huge...dacschshunds are 3 stars good with kids. Be careful. Oh, and my friend has a friendly daschshund, not an aggressive one.

I'm the mother of a 2 yr old black&tan. She is my baby. I've had reds in the past. I was told when I got her that b/t are more trying to house break. They were right, but patience and perserverence will pay off. You should know also they like to dig, thats what they were bread for. But like anyother toddler, their attention can be redirected. She is obsessed with playing (ball team) she's a great out-fielder. As with any animal, the love you give, you get back 10 fold.

very loyal, great with kids, but they should only be in a single story house as there backs get too strained going up stairs and they get problems with their lower back

I've had dachshunds most of my life and know they are excellent companions and are very sweet dogs.yes,just watch their backs and the weight though.
