Do these places have special requirements before they will take them?

Check www.petfinder.com for shelters local to you. Many give instructions on surrendering an animal. You can call and make sure they are "No Kill". Pure breds and many mixes have groups specific to them, (ex. Pug Rescue). Even if you don't find what you need nearby, try calling for advice. Not every rescue group is listed.

There are public shelters like the SPCA or Humane Society that will generally take the animal for free. There are private shelters and whether or not the charge you a fee is up to the discretion of the owner of the shelter. Some breed specific rescue groups have a surrender fee some don't, it all depends on the breed. Other rescue groups that take any breed or type of animal generally take them for free also.

Try to have all of the pets vet records with you and any other certificates and/or info that you have on them. Lists of what they like and don't like are helpful along with when and where you got them and their birth date.

I'm sorry that you have to give up your pet(s). It's a very sad thing to have to loose an animal but it's far better that you surrender them then just abandon them.

if you have a petco or petsmart in you area..try that, they sometimes have pet adoptions. put pics of them at you vet office. ask petstores. try to make the pound a last resort. ususally the pound would let u put up an add also.
