I grew up in the suburbs (125,000), I now live in a city with less than 250 people.
As to why, I like my resort area. We're I live, people from the cities come to vacation. I just have to walk out my door. The nice thing is they go home, and peace is once again in the air.
Another reason is that in the cities south of me, violent crime has increased over 30% compared to last year. And I would rather not subject my family to such an environment.

Well I grew up in the country and it is nice but I have now gotten married and have lived in the city for 16 years and I'm not sure I could move back to the country. It is nice to visit and it is nice to get away from the noise but driving 30 minutes 1 way to go to a store would not be good now days. Gas is to high. Altho raising kids would probably be better, but then again....maybe not.

I would rather live in the country, because it is quieter, has cleaner air, and you can practice music more loudly without worrying about your neighbors hearing. But I wouldn't want to be too far from at least a small city, because I would miss the variety of what city life has to offer--live theater, parks, etc.
