depends on location, probably. i've heard prices for behind the wheel being like $300 for 7 weeks, or individually $80 per lesson

Far too expensive my friend! I think I was paying about £22 per lesson (@ 1hour) 6 years ago.
I would imagine it's still around the £20 sort of mark for one hours lesson.
I recommend you take lessons from a reputable school such as BSM or AA, if you wish to learn with a private instructor, make sure you get a GOOD recommendation.
You have to be cautious because there are instructors who will keep you on for as long as possible just to squeeze more lessons out of you (I'm not tarring them all with the same brush but there are some instructors like this).
I had an instructor like that, got sick of him, elbowed him, went with BSM whereby my new instructor told me on my first lesson I was test-ready whereas my old instructor slagged off everything I did etc.
I know I've gone beyond your question in this answer but I don't want to see people chucking good money away because of a greedy instructor.
... One last thing: http://www.bsm.co.uk/book_lessons/index.html
Good luck, safe driving!

Hi, this would depend on the driving school.
I would not go with the one that cost the very least, you may need to take more hours learning, the ones that cost the least are not all ways the best.
A good instructor will charge a price of around £21 per hour, he/she can charge this because he/she will be well known and have a good pass rate.
Some instructors may only charge £15/£18 per hour, that may be because they are just starting as instructors or no one will reccomend them, so charging less gets them work.
you would need at least 30-40 hours to get to test standard.
Remember, just because you may go with AA or Bsm does not mean you will get value for money, the instructors with the said companys have to charge you more because they have to give a cut of your lesson price to the company they work for. we all know that bsm stands for bring some money then bring some more !!

The average lesson is approximately £22 per hour, Some are around £17 but be sure to get a really good instructor or you could be throwing good money after bad. 12hrs??? not very realistic, Unless you are quick learner. AA or BSM are the best and both offer special offers for students and also offer good deals on your insurance too.

It depends on what state you live in and who teaches you. You'll need to make some calls or look up department of motor vehicles near you and they can steer you in the right direction.. good luck , drive carefully

I take it with BSM and it £24.50 per hour, so it really expensive i subject you should shop around and ask from people who have recently passed on who they would recommend. You can also go to the BSM websites for quotations for your area.
