Ok, it was basically that player one outkicked player 2. The winning hand was as follows:
pair of 5's , Ace, Queen, Ten. (remember , 5 cards must play and that is the best 5 card hand which player 1 can make.)
player 2 had this hand: pair of 5's, Ace, Queen, nine. He was just outkicked by the ten.

All poker hands consist of 5 cards.
So in Texas hold em you choose the best 5 out of the 7 (the 5 in middle and 2 hole cards)
So player 1`s best was : 5-5-A-Q-10
player 2`s best hand was : 5-5-A-Q-9
As you can see player one has a slightly better hand as when both have a pair there is 3 kickers left to decide the hand.
No matter what hand you got there will always be 5 cards used to decide the winner. So if both had flushes it would be the higher flush that wins. Eg
A - K - 8 - 4 - 3 flush
would win a
A - K - 8 - 4 - 2 flush.

You make the highest hand possible by using 5 out of the 7 cards. In your scenario both share the 5s, A, and Q. that is 4 cards so who ever has the next highest card wins. If there were a J on the board then the pot would be split for a tie.
First read some books and learn the game. Then practice what you learned at some free sites. Take my advice and don't just play any old free site or table. When playing for free players have nothing to lose so they play a very loose reckless game. Playing like that will develop bad habits and cost you a bundle if you ever play for real money. Sign up at the site below and play in the "sit n go" category play the 2000 play chip tables at the minimum. Yes its free but the players have something to play for (last man standing gets paid), the level of play is more thoughtful.
good luck

Assuming Texas Holdem, THe player 1 wins.
He has: 5,5,10,Q,A
Player 2 has: 5,5,9,Q,A
Had the 6 on the board been a J or a K, then it would have been a push.
You can't just look at the ace. Since you both have one, then you go to the next highest card, the Q. Since both of you can use that, then the next highest card.. Player 1's 10 beats player 2's 9.

Player 1, of course, has the BEST 5 cards made up from the two cards and the community cards.

Since the community cards are shared by all players, each player has the same high card(s) there, so the tiebreaker comes down to who has the highest card in their hand (and it always will); ergo, Hand 1 wins.
