Depending on where you live, midwives are either Licenced Midwives, Registered midwives, Certified Nurse MIdwives, Lay MIdwives, or sometimes Granny or traditional Midwives. Traditional Birth Attendents are generally women trained in developing countries to attend village births.
A doula is not a midwife...a midwife is not necessarily a nurse, you can train to be a midwife directly.
Midwives are specialists in normal pregnancy, neonatal care and well women gyne care. A midwife will usually have 4+ years of university education, attend a minimum number of births and prenatal, postnatal and baby checks before being registered.
Hope this helps.
