I want it to look like expensive baseboards, but am looking for a substitute for wood that might bbe cheaper

Generally that would be 1"x5". You can purchase 1"x5"x6' pine at Home Depot in the lower grade lumber for probaby $3. Then just paint and caulk them.

Do I understand this correctly? You want a baseboard that is 2 inches thick? Most baseboard, even the expensive mouldings, aren't that thick, unless it is built up of several pieces.

Most modern mouldings are only about 3 inches wide too... the older product was usually wider.

You might check with a salvage supply, or look for some old homes that are being torn down, and see if you can take some of the material out of them.

Do you mean 2 in. X 5 Ft?Most lumber comes in 8 Ft. lengths.2 in is rather narrow for a baseboard and that limits your options.They make plastic baseboards but they do not have the expensive look you want.You can take a plain board and trim it out top and bottom with molding to get the look you want but molding is not cheap either.Your best bet is to find someone with a shaper or router table that will mill it for you out of 1"X 2".
