If the two of you are staying late or going somewhere, ask him if his girlfriend is waiting for him or ask him to call her so she won't worry.

Just ask him. But don't ask "Do you have a girlfriend?" The word girlfriend sets off all kinds of emotional tripwires for some reason. Instead, ask "Are you seeing anyone" or "Are you single?" But use the same tone of voice you would use if you were asking him if he has any pets or siblings or something like that, like you don't really care about the answer and are just making conversation.

Why not reveal? If he is interested in you and you ask if he has a girlfriend, that will further the relationship. If he has a girlfriend, he will be flattered that you asked.

Ask him to hang out with you and your friends and to bring a few people if he wants to. If he brings a girlfriend then he has one. If not then go in for the kill and straight up ask him.

"Where is your girlfriend?"......you'll get an answer without him even suspecting your fishing around for an answer.
