Having enjoyed many of his paintings at museums in London and Paris, I decided to read more about his life. The book I read is a historical novel by Irving Stone called, "Lust for Life". This is a fabulous book which is a meaty read as well. I thoroughly learned a lot more about the man's life.
I read in the book that, although he shot himself with a shotgun in a wheat field, he didn't actually die there. He survived long enough to drag himself to his brother's house where he finally expired. Read it and enjoy.

van gogh shot himself when he was 37. if he had been officially diagnosed, he probably would have been called manic-depressive. he would go into manic states, when he produced most of his work, with wild colors and patterns, and then would sulk and do nothing in his depression. i can only assume that one day he got too low and took a gun.
he also had social problems, with both friends and lovers.

He suffered from what is now called manic depression and schizophrenia. At the time, psychiatric disorders were approached and treated much differently, and most likely he didn't receive the help he needed to cope with the feelings these brought about.

Van Gogh was proven to be mentally unstable. Most researchers suggest that he was bypolar. unlike his brother who was perfectly sane.

I think it was because they kept spelling his name "van Goo" instead of Van Gogh.

One theory was he lost his mind because of his paints.
Many paints were mercury-based and he ingested them, either through his aggressive painting style (he got splattered with the paint and let it absorb through his skin) or he would stick a brush in his mouth as he worked with another.
He was 37. He sold only one painting in his lifetime, to brother Theo.

If I'm not mistaken he suffered from depression which probably led to his suicide. Not sure at what age though.
