They are extremely bright, inquisitive and very difficult to train if you're not very experienced and up to the challenge. They are harder than average to housebreak - I don't trust my terriers loose in the house until they are at LEAST two yeasr old. They will dig up your yard and bark all day if left outside where they can see the world passing by. They will dash around an apartment, jumping on and off the furniture, until you and your downstairs neighbors are insane. They will play tug-of-war with your kid's clothes and steal anything just to get you to chase them. They will also torment your cat and kill your kid’s hamsters. Hell of a lot of fun or frustration - take your pick! I love and own terriers, but I've never recommened a JR to someone else. An awful lot of them end up in the shelters.

I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training BEFORE yo get the puppy. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan

Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on tv.

Any dog can be easy to train, you just have to remember consistency. Make sure you take your new puppy out at least 10-15 minutes after he eats/drinks and always take him out when he wakes up. I would suggest crate training your puppy. Dogs do not like to mess where they sleep so this will make your potty training much easier. You also may not want to give him food and water after a certain time of night. I usually do not let my dogs eat or drink past 7pm. This way when you take them out before bed time, they are less likely to make any messes throughout the night. If you do crate train, make sure you get a crate that is just big enough for your puppy to stand up and be comfortable. If your crate is too big your puppy will end up messing because there is extra room for him to do so. If you need assistance, ask a pet store clerk and they can point you in the right direction. Are they good with children? I have found that they tend to snap at kids. They do not like to be poked at and kids seem to like to do this. I had a jack russell years ago and he was very snippy towards children. I think as long as you get him as a puppy and he grows up with the children, he will be fine. Just remember to educate your children on the do's and don'ts of playing with the puppy. Make sure they never get in his face or pokes at him. Congratulations on your new puppy and good luck!!

i love jack russell terriers! i hope you have done your research on this cute, active dog. they require a lot of patience, training and exercise. i strongly suggest a kennel for your puppy - they have separation anxiety issues and it will feel safer. the dog whisperer techniques work the best. they are great with kids and love to play constantly. (kind of like a two year old for a real long time) they are loyal, affectionate and highly intelligent. take the time to properly train your jack in the beginning and you will enjoy your dog for years to come.

I believe they are as they are an intelligent breed. My mini foxi X Jack Russell is an extremely smart dog. We had him for a week and he picked it up then we moved to our new house and it took him just another week. Putting their face close to it and saying NO when they do something inside I found worked. They are hyperactive dogs so have fun. Mine is good with kids - but isnt around them much and Ive heard that they can snap at them.
Good luck with toilet training.

I hope you are ready for a little tornado to enter your life! If you do not have a lot of time to spend with your dog, and a lot of patience, you"ll probably want to choose another breed.
