A couple of days ago I bought a Kenmore water dispenser from Sears. I purchased the 5 gallon water jug at Walmart and filled it with RO water from the store. After I got it hooked up at home, I filled a glass of water from it & the water tasted like the plastic the bottle is made from. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of that taste? The only thing I can think to do is keep running water thru it, but the taste is really strong & I don't think that will work. Any help would be great, cause I can't drink the water from the faucet; it's hooked up to a water softner system.

I did read the manual and it said nothing about plastic tasting water. I called Walmart and all they told me was to return the jug and get my money back. Some help that was. I called Culligan and they said the water must be bad - it's not the jug. When I emptied the water from the jug (bout 10 minutes ago) it had a really funky smell to it. Guess I'll just have to go with Culligan, cause I know their water is good.

I recently got a similar dispenser (another brand) and had the same problem. The problem really is the bottle, and the only way to solve it is to keep using it. It took a few weeks and a couple of water changes for me to get rid of the smell. Try running a couple whole bottles through the dispenser all at once, and the smell should be significantly reduced.

I have an aquarium store and we use RO water for our Salt water fish and then mix a certain type of salt for them. Now concerning the taste of plastic in your water is because the plastic from the jug is seeping into your water, I would reccomend buying another jug that is water safe. Not all plastic are compatible with water. We use Food Grade Water Jugs to hold our RO water and Salted water. I would say find a dealer in your neighbourhood that has these and that my friend should solve your problem. Your water is not bad. We use a three chamber water unit that removes total disolved solids. Good luck and hope this helps.

Check out two sources: www.Gaiam.com, and www.realgoods.com. Both are truly ecological organizations and both have online catalogs for you to order from. For a really inexpensive solution, get the Non-Leaching Polycarbonate Bottles available at Real Goods. The 2.2 lilter is about $6 and the 3 gallon is about $18. Neither imparts a nasty smell or taste to the water. They also have more expensive filtration systems for filtering your entire house if you wish. Have fun searching and good luck!

There's no reason you can't drink water from a softener system. I'm sure the Culligan guy will agree.

But you one of the PUR filter pitchers. They are fairly inexpensive and do a good job of filtering tap water, you can even buy the one that goes directly on your faucet. The water softener is a good thing too, by the way.

You could pour a heavy concentration of bleach in there, and then fill with water. But why do that when it should be easy to have Sears take it back?

I would suggest you get a hold of Kenmore and see what they recommend. Did you check the instruction manual?
