My CD player is an aftermarket one, bought at best buy about 6 months ago. It worked great with absolutely no skipping even on really bumpy roads at first, but it has been gradually skipping more and more. Its still not terrible, but it does skip often.

Is this something that cleaning will improve or is it more of a CD player problem, like the suspension or something?

Its not just my cd. All my cd's do it. Oddly my home burned cd's do it more, but they all skip.

Could be something with the buffer inside the radio - but chances are it's related to the installation of the unit. I have had to re-install a lot of work from Best Buy and Circuit City, and their workmanship leaves more to be desired. Bring it back to Best Buy and make them honor their warranty on the installation. Have them verify that it is installed tight and nothing has worked loose. Chances are, depending on the vehicle it's installed in, something has loosened up simply from time and needs to be tightened up.

I don't amaige that it is your lens. I would have to say that your CD player is loose in the mounts. I would say either take it back to whoever installed it (or try to do it your self) and tighten the mounting devices for the cd player. If you can move the cd player around inside the car image what happens when you are moving down the road and hit a bump. I would have to say that this is what is wrong with your CD player.

If you can reach the lens, take a cuetip, use rubbing alchol, dip the cuetip in the alchol, rub it with one side, then dry it with the other side, it probably will. If not, it's your CD!
