I've been a teacher in both public and private schools in my country for some years and I've found that students who learned to read using phonics developed greater analyzing skills and overall they do better in school than students who were taught using the natural or whole language approach. I wonder if someone knows if phonics have something to do with how we think and how the brain develops.

As a teacher of students with special needs in the United States, I can definitively say from both the research articles I've read, and from personal experience, that properly taught phonics greatly improves both a child's reading skills and their ability to analyze any sort of information.

Phonics went out of vogue for a while because many teachers were not bringing in the "bridging" steps to whole-sentence and paragraph comprehension. This failure resulted in "phonics" as a whole being maligned for a while (sadly).

Now, especially in special ed, it is coming back strongly, through the research work and training of special ed teachers and organizations like the International Dyslexia Association.

Well, I learned to read in Wales using phonics and came to Canada at age 9 where phonics weren't yet in vogue.

At age 9, I was reading far more advanced writings than my fellow students and I completed the grade 4 spelling book in 2 weeks where the rest of the class did it throughout the whole year.

I can't say phonics was the answer, but if you can read and comprehend at an early age, you're pretty much set for life.
