Ideally, one tips 15-20% of the meal bill, not including taxes.

This depends entirely on where you are. If you are in New Zealand, there is no tipping, but a waiter is happy if you leave the change on the table. If you are in North America, 15% for average service, 20% for really great service is the rule of thumb. Some countries make it easy for you. In Canada, for instance, taxes come to about 15%, so just give the amount of the tax as a tip and you've solved the problem! And the tip is based on the amount BEFORE tax is added.

I tip based on the amount after tax, but 20% is a generous amount so you could base that on the pre-tax total if you wanted. Frankly, for average service I only give 10%-15%!

Before tax.

But 15% to 20%; 20% for really good service, or if the amount of the bill is small.

I say tip them what they deserve. Some waiters and waitresses dont deserve that much. If they did an awesome job and all you had were burgers and fries then give them a 5 spot. If they were crappy then give em 50 cents. Tips should not be based on the amount of the bill, it should be based off service.

20% that is great tip. If you give me 20% tip I will make you any meal you want.

No Seriously, It is after the tax and it is 15%. I give 20% when I go out for Breakfest. Lunch and Dinner 15%.

You are supposed to give 15% without the tax. It doesn't matter if you give exactly 15% or 20%, aslong as you give them a tip.

In some countries, service tax already included in the meal.
So, I don't give any.

If tax in not included, I will think 5-10% is proper.
After all, TIPS = To Insure Proper Service.
