the best way to brush your teeth:
- place the tooth brush at 45 degree on the cirvical potion of your tooth (touching both the tooth & gingiva)
-roll the tooth brush to the coronal direction in a sweep move
-repeat this step 10 times/tooth surface
* this is for cleaning facial & lingual surfaces of the tooth, for
occlusal surface:
-the tooth brush perpindiular to the tooth & in circular motion
*interproximal cleaning: you should use dental floss & tooth peaks
, for the later use the one with triangular cross section rather than circular

Hey...
To brush your teeth correctly, this is what you'll do:
Hold a SOFT toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. The bristles should be toward your gums. Brush 2-3 teeth at a time using a small circular motion.
The proper amount of time for brushing is approximately 2-3 minutes.

when i was in the military 20+ years ago, a dentist told my company that the best way is to brush up and down, as well as the bottoms of the molars and even the inside of the mouth to get rid of bad breath. (this does not kill germs, but does help to remove the food and other stuff that builds up between the teeth.)
Now here's the official answer from wikipedia:
"When brushing the teeth, one first applies toothpaste to the bristles of the toothbrush. Then, while holding the handle, rubs the bristles against the inner and outer surfaces of his/her teeth with circular movements.
"This vertical movement cleans the small pieces of food that get stuck in the gaps between the teeth, between the teeth and the gum, and in the crevices of the horizontal chewing surface of the molars (the rearmost teeth). Rubbing with the shaft of the toothbrush is not recommended, as it would not be effective in cleaning and could damage the gum.
"When brushing, the toothpaste forms a foam, which should be rinsed out with water.
"The brush should be replaced every 3 months, because the bristles get worn in usage. To prevent the spread of pathogens, it's advisable to not share one's toothbrush with anyone else.
"Most dentists recommend that teeth be brushed at least twice a day, preferably after eating. Also, an electric toothbrush can be used instead of a manual brush. A dentist or dental hygienist can teach and demonstrate proper brushing techniques.
"Brushing the teeth is the most important part of oral hygiene, but there are others, such as flossing the gaps a toothbrush cannot clean, and regular visits to the dentist."

Because every mouth is different, there is more than one technique of brushing that has proven to be effective. Deciding which technique is most appropriate for you depends largely on your teeth position and gum condition. Consult your physician and/or dentist to determine which brushing technique is most appropriate for your mouth.
Generally, most dentists recommend a circular technique for brushing. This includes brushing only a small group of teeth at a time -- gradually covering the entire mouth. The importance of maintaining a circular or elliptical motion is emphasized as using a back and forth motion may cause the following:
* a receded gum surface
* an exposed and tender root surface
* a wearing down of the gum line
Instead, dentists recommend the following method:
Brushing
Step 1: Place the toothbrush beside your teeth at a 45-degree angle.
Step 2: Gently brush teeth only a small group of teeth at a time (in a circular or elliptical motion) until the entire mouth is covered.
Step 3: Brush the outside of the teeth, inside of the teeth, the chewing surfaces, and in between each tooth.
Step 4: Gently brush the tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.
Step 5: Repeat steps 1 through 4 at least twice daily, especially after meals and snacks.

Use a soft toothbrush, brush in a circular motion but don't apply too much pressure so to avoid wearing off the enamel, be sure to lightly brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth, spend at least 3 minutes brushing your teeth, and don't forget to floss.

Use a soft bristled toothbrush. Brush at a 45 degree angle, don't brush too hard, brush for at least 2 minutes, get every surface. And make sure you floss!

I believe using an up and down motion instead of a side to side motion is better for cleaning because it touches more surface of the tooth although I'd prefer to use one of those sonic toothbrushes as well.
