That is an age-old question. I prefer a stick. They give you more precise control over your speed. As far as trouble, there are far fewer parts in a manual. And as far as them being cheap... Porsche doesn't even offer an automatic in some models. Now, the pros and cons:
Sticks:
Pros: Precise speed control. Less maintenance, if you're not hard on the clutch. More if you are. The celica is a 4 speed auto, vs. a 5 speed stick, so better fuel economy. Easier to burn out with a stick. A lot more sporty feel and look to the car.
Cons: More work to drive. This especially is an issue if you drive in stop and go traffic. Having that other hand free is sometimes a necessity... i.e. when on a date. Clutch replacement.... ewwww.
Automatic:
Pros: Ease of driving, no clutch. Keeps one hand free, see above. Smoother ride. That's all I can come up with.
Cons: Less fuel economy. Makes sports cars more mundane and boring. More work if they go out. Replacing Fluid, and filters. more expensive to replace. Just a lot less fun to drive.
There ya go. Either way, Celica is a great car. The 1983 Celica GT convertible is one of the coolest cars ever. But, the 2k1 is good as well.

Celica is not quite a performance car and not quite a family car. I've owned three in the past and i loved them. Their buyers are younger, so 2 doors and a stick isn't an inconvenience. Plus the late model Celica have 6 speeds, which are in demand with kids.
They have good sturdy engines but their longer stroke and lower rev limit than some of the competitors make them better for longevity and mileage than racing. An automatic will be fine. The '01 was made before the engine sludge coverup started for Toyota.

Sticks in general give you a better feel for the car too, like better control and all. It feels like your body is part of the car when you are drving it because in generals with stick you have more control of how you want your vehicle to glide.
........Oh and my brother drives a Toyota Celica right now and it's a manual!

If you plan on hot rodding the car I would go with a stick but if you want less trouble and better gas milage I would go with a auto. autos are great for in town and traveling. over all autos are just as good as sticks. sticks show that a car is cheaper.

if you want to go fast you should choose the manual one, because manuals are going faster than automatics
