On so many forms they ask what is your ethnicity, Its doesn't ask if your legal or illegal, (before somebody mentions it)
but White, Black, Hispanic, Asian...

But if we are American why do we need to catagorize ourselves?

I by the way am a proud Hispanic American with some Apache from way down the line.

I don't care about checking that either, I was trying to make a point that we can not say were "just American" as some on here are saying we should say. We do have different ehtnic back grounds and thats ok.

Well here is where the problem lies. A person living in Argentia is an American. A person that lives in Mexico is an American. A person that lives in Canada is an American. Our country is just united states of the continent North America that we live on. If I dont get best answer for this Im gonna be mad!

america does make it hard to call americans american's...I'm Colombian and I'm sorry but I'm proud not to be an american, and by the way, the only real americans are Native Americans, Everyone else just came from europe. And the classify the americans as "Native Americans"

Because the bean counters insist on it. They have to make sure no one is discriminating in any way against any sub-group. It really gets stupid when they do the counting in prison, and then tell administration they need more of a specific race to make it balanced. I thought criminals were in prison, no?

I'm with you on this one.

It is because of the affirmative action programs, however. If a school has to prove it is making progress in test scores for all ethnic groups, for example, it has to first ask to what ethnic groups people belong.

i have quite an easy time calling myself an american are your difficulties with the fact that you are asked or that there isnt a box to check to describe you besides we will all be one race in a matter of time and none of the boxes will apply anyway

I think it is just for an idea of the people that live here, since we are such a melting pot and alot of people lie on the census.

we don't need to categorize ourselves. we're americans period. and that "united statians" is soooo not cool. if people ask you what's your nationality you don't have to say mexican american or african american or asian american...just say american.

my gay friends doesn't say "oh hi i'm gay american".
