There are 2 sides to this read them both:

If you are from Australia, then it is relevant that English is your first language and for anyone, "English" is the best language to learn, it is the most learned "second language" in the world and the reason it benefits good is besides Hindi(India's Language I think) and Chinese, it is the 3rd most spoken language in the world, but spanish is right on english and there just as many speakers, but "English" is more widespoken than any other language and what I mean is that it isn't the MOST SPOKEN language, but it stretches around the globe, but is kind of hard to learn and here is where my second point to this question comes in:

Spanish is I guess the best language to learn because it is spoken just as much as English, but I don't know if it is as learned in second language (I doubt it) because it is the official language of Mexico, Central America, All of South America except Brazil(Portuguese), and Spain. It is easier to learn than English because spelling follows sound more closely and since English is your first language, then you know it doesn't do that all the time. I can't explain that over the computer because you haven't learned how Spanish is supposed to sound and I can't voice myself, but once you start learning, you wll see what I am talking about. There are too many words in English that don't sound like they are spelled like: Two, through, enough, and lots of others, but that doesn't happen in Spanish as much and if you want to learn it, go ahead. You can get better jobs if you are bilingual. It is good to see that you want to learn Spanish, no one in America it seems does. I am not saying they don't, it just shows.

The reason for learning a language is to communicate with others. What is the current and/or projected number of spanish speaking people in Australia? Think about the people you run into on a daily basis. Do you plan to travel or live somewhere else?

Chinese, Italian, and Greek are listed as the most spoken immigrant languages in Australia.

When checking for what Translators are in greatest demand in Australia...it appears to be Chinese.

Japanese (if interested in technology). Even though you're not living in the US, it may be useful to learn Spanish, many other countries speak the language (Spain, etc.) French.

I'm of the belief that people should speak at least two other languages. The more people you can speak to the better! Most people I know at least two languages, English and French. or English and Spanish.

hmm

well for americans, Spanish is good because a lot of people speak it, it is easy and there is a growing number of mexican/hispanic immigrants that are moving in to the country. the minorities are also a big part of our economy... but there are plenty of languages to learn

I'd say the most helpful would be mandarin (but good luck trying to learn it!). There are the most people in the world that speak this language next to english.

but thats why...

Also good choices are Hindi / Ordue ... Two very similar languages... you know this language you can speak with a ton of people all throughout india and pakistan and other parts of asia. While not everyone speaks the language you can get by very will with this in that part of asia

so it all depends on what/where you like!

Living in the US I would say that Spanish is the best to learn because of all the Hispanics here, but being in Australia I don't know if it would do you as much good as it would here. That is about all I can say about that.

There are 2 main languages around the world: English and Spanish. If you know both, then you can go anywhere and be able to communicate with people.

if you are not living in the U.S. then I have no idea why Spanish would be the best language to learn. IF you move to the U.S. then YA learn Spanish, cause most of the U.S. seems to have a prodominant Hispanic population.

If you are bilingual in Spanish, you are very marketable in the job market.

Spanish is a fun language, and Spanish women are hot!

But Japanese, Chinese or German would probably prove the most useful.

The french suck, they're a bunch of cheese-eating surrender monkeys, and they stink. Learn German, the language of a superior race. Spanish is for the stinking masses.
