Buy lottery tickets

2006-06-10 15:09:08 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

The only way you can win the lottery is to buy lottery tickets. There is absolutely no system for picking number no matter what anybody tries to tell you. Just pick numbers and play. But understand, you have more of a chance to be hit by lightning than to win any significant amount of money in the lottery. For example, if you buy five lottery tickets a day spending $5.00 you will probably go your whole life without winning anything higher than a few thousand dollars. But.....

Rather than play the lottery, Put 5 dollars a day in a 4 percent credit union or online bank account, Thats 35 dollars a week and about 140 dollars a month. In 20 years you'll have over 50,000 dollars. Keep doing it for 10 more years and youll have "won" over 100,000. Now that's a sure thing!

The odds of winning the jackpot on the UK lottery (which, for the benefit of the US readers here, is a pick 6 from 49) are about 1 in 14 million.

All number combinations have equal odds of being drawn. The numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 are no more or less likely to come up than 44,45,46,47,48,49.

Each draw is independent, so the results of the Saturday draw have no bearing in terms of probabilities on the Wednesday or following Saturday. This means that last Saturday's numbers could still come up the following wednesday or saturday!!

Despite the odds being so low, people buy tickets because they are buying a dream. After all, you cannot dream about a lottery win unless you have a ticket.

The only way of increasing your odds of winning is to buy more tickets. However, this is pointless because buying 5 tickets doesn't increase your pleasure by 5. The odds gained in relation to the increase in utility doesn't warrant buying any more than 1 ticket. If you were to buy 100 tickets, your odds of winning the jackpot are still 1 in 140,000 - which is like being drawn out of a hat consisting of all the people in a medium/large town.

A system some people might use in a syndicate when buying lots of tickets is known as "wheeling". Basically, its a technique to arrange say 8 numbers over 5 tickets so that if you get 6 out of 8 numbers - you're guaranteed at least 5 numbers on one ticket. There are other combinations for different amounts of numbers.

Wheeling doesn't increase your chances of winning the jackpot. However, it increases your prize if you pick the correct numbers because several lines will have successes (e.g. 1 line has 5 winning numbers, 1 line has 4 winning numbers and 1 line has 3 winning numbers in a hypothetical setup).

No lottery can ever be truly random because of a certain level of bias in the mechanics of the machine (and the laws of physics). However, the level of bias will be far too insignificant to be of any use. It would probably take millions of draws to illustrate any possible bias.

Humans are very biased when they choose their numbers e.g. choosing birth days 1-31 and months 1-12. Your best bet is to use a random number generator to pick your numbers, as this is more likely to result in a larger win.

If you live long enough...oh, about 41,000 years...and played the lottery every day, it is likely that you would win once.
