I married my second husband because of that "Yes Ma'am thing. LOL Speak as you chose to. It is charming. I lived in Tenn for 7 years and moved back north and still catch myself, using a little southern dialect.

People complaining about some people butchering the English language outta take a look Rap music and Ebonics and street. HELLO...Atleast I know what my Southern neighbors are saying. And those way south (Mexico) if you want to live and work here learn the damn language or go home.

I suppose the most well known person with a southern accent of late was the American Idol singer Kellie Pickler.

While I personally think there is nothing sexier than a woman with a *soft* southern drawl, I think it's fair to say the Kellie was pretty much speaking a foreign language to most viewers. I know I'd have been happier with sub-titles.

So, like any accent/dialect, taken to extremes it can a bother, but most of the time it just adds a little interest to a conversation.

Knew about the coke thing instead of saying pepsi and about the yes ma'am no ma'am and yes sir and no sir thing but didn't know you get paddled for not saying it in school and I didn't know about the other things.

Its much better English than what these idiots are typing here on Beta! Have you seen the way the questions are posted here? No pride or ever legible for that matter! English is definitely not the language spoken here so I wouldn't get too tripped out over your English, it sounds perfect to me. Now here on Beta, just sit and watch what these illiterate people put up here!!!! Your Einstein compared to what I see here daily. It is not a joke, it is real and not prejudiced in the least.

Cool Thanks for the lesson. It's always nice to learn a slightly different slant. Most small town areas have sayings that are known only to the locals.

Anyone can understand if they pay attention. Sometimes it involves listening to the whole subject and filling in the word that fits best.

Yep. Lived in the south all of my life and I have encountered at least 10 different kinds of southern accents all in the same state. (Georgia)
