Try Cars.com or Yahoo Auto's, your local paper and even your local copy of Autotrader will have stuff you can't find online. Maybe a police auction or seizure, you can find info for that online too.

A good buy for a new car is the PT Cruiser. You can lease one for about 200 a month pretty easy. Good prices for new and used cars are actually trucks! A 4 cylinder 2 wheel driver Ford Ranger, Chevy S-10, or mid 90's Dodge Dakota will sell cheap and are pretty reliable. They're also cheaper when it comes to insurance.

Try cheap cars.com, or if you have access to the "Tradin Times" they have a section in the auto classifieds, "Cars under $1000.00" . Now keep in mind most of these are not a car your son would see on the "Fast and the Furious", but from experience most of these cars fit the need from A to B. and are relatively reliable.
