The question is poised so that answers can make an argument to early posters without any recourse from the original poster. This is why nobody wants to be first.
I'm guessing you want to know the major differences between the Protestant denominations and what theological viewpoints drive an individual to join one denomination in favor of another.
I think this article is a good place to start for historical reference on the establishment of denominations. There are over 150 denominations of Baptists alone, so to define each one and then the Methodists, Presbyterians, Orthodox churces, etc... would be a small set of encyclopedias of religeon.

I am a Christian
I belong currently to an Assembly of God church
I do not think that there is one religion that is completely correct in there ways
I have attended several denominations and prefer the more Apostolic ways due to their belief in the Gifts of the Spirit. I enjoy pentecostal but their rules are not totally Bible based. I do have a respect for their sacrifices in their lifestyles though.
Baptist churches as a majority do not believe in the Gifts of the Spirit that they are still used today.
So I go where I do because it is close and I am at peace with their beliefs and am comfortable in my own beliefs because they do not push me to lay down my Oneness belief.

I am an Episcopalian. I don't necessarily believe my denomination is the "right" one, but I feel most comfortable in the Episcopalian Church. Generally speaking, we are more liberal than some of the other religions and I feel this meshes best with my own personal Christian attitude of community service and tolerance.

People are suppose to guess my 'denomination'...lol (Nobody guessed right, so far!) 10 pts for whoever does!
but besides that, I don't really think my denomination is the ONLY right one...I'm not biggot. Any denomination that obeys/lives by the teachings of God is right.
I think God made different denominations to minister to people of different worship styles/tastes...some are more conservative...some are more liberal...some are very traditional...
(you get the idea.)
Nice question.

I am a Pentecostal and although I do not state it is the only "right" one, it is where I can actually feel the power of God and commune with him and confess to him in a way that is a private conversation between JESUS and I, even in a room full of people while speaking out loud. I confess to no man, I unburden my soul to my LORD.
Also the Bible states to "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD." A lot of churches I have attended fail to do this. Melancholy, morose music, and there seems to be no joy. My goodness we are celebrating GOD'S Greatness and love. Many "Christians" celebrate the LORD with such a lack of enthusiasm, their favorite ball team gets more action that GOD.

honestly i don't think the denomination is the one who's going to save us, or the different denominations are the right ones or wrong ones, what i belive is that is more important what kind of relationship i have with God and if i obey his word, because we all know, we can go to church every day, but that doesn't make you a christian..the relationship you have with God that's what make you a christian......

I believe that there is no ONE denomination that is 100% correct. I've been Methodist, Catholic, a member of a United Church of Christ. Each church has given me ways to enhance my spiritual growth... they each have given me information that I let go in one ear and out the other. I try to live by the Jesus' commandments in the New Testament... Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, strength, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. By the way... that means EVERY neighbor... grumpy, rich, poor, black, white, gay, straight, etc. etc. etc.

The denominations are simply "perspectives". I have raised 4 children and each one of them would would give you a different description of myself....different but accurate.
