Yes you can halt the disease, but you can never regain the bone loss that you have suffered. Don't be to worried about seventy percent of the population have some form of periodontal disease. It is due to poor home care and not flossing. No matter how much we try to drill into our patients head that they need to floss every day many still do not do it. It is great that you are concerned about your oral health and I am sure from here on out you will be diligent with your home care. As long as you are following the instructions that your hygienist is giving you then you should be fine. Because you have periodontal disease you will always have to be extra careful with your home care routine but doing the proper home care will hopefully ensure that you will not have to deal with further bone loss and infection. Remember that any bleeding you get while brushing and flossing is a sign that the disease has come back and your gums have infection again. If this happens see your dentist/hygienist right away to check your pocket depths. Also a three month recall system is the standard when you have been diagnosed with perio. Seeing your dentist/hygienist more often ensures that they can keep a closer watch on your oral health. Good luck.

If you have early periodontitis, you can still save yourself. You're not hopeless.
First step, which you're already taking: Scaling and root planing. After you have this done (sorry it's so expensive), you'll notice that your gums "shrink up" and some of your pocket depths will reduce significantly. If you have any bone loss, your bone will not grow back, but by maintaining your oral health, you can prevent any further loss.
Good luck with it, and be sure to have a cleaning 3-4 months after your SRP procedure. Keep on top of it, and you should be okay in the long run.

There is no cure to periodontal disease, but gum disease can be controlled. That is to say it can be stopped from getting worse. There are some very interesting studies in the pipe line. But as of yet it still a hard to get bone to grow around exposed roots reliably. Its easier to graft bone and place man made roots(implants) in the new bone. that is because the made roots (implants) are carefully controlled and prepared in a sterile environment. What makes your teeth impossible to cure is because once you loose the bone the roots are exposed, contaminated by the oral environment. So the bone cells have no way to re-attach to the tooth.

Yes, I did. 23 years ago when I was pregnant with my son the chemistry of my mouth changed with the pregnancy and I had the peridontal surgery. I have been diligent ever since. I had no problems until a year ago when there was an infection in my gum and the dentist and I couldn't make it go away with scaling. I read on the internet about something invented by the Israelis that the dentist puts into your gum and it slowly releases medication. It's like a tiny stick he puts in-it did not hurt at all. The dentist got it and put it in and it worked. I just googled it for you-it's a periochip. I sound like a commercial, but it worked.

sorry Johnny, you can not reverse the damage done in perio however you can stop further progression of the disease by proper brushing and you must must must floss the tooth brush alone can not get the food and bacteria the collect between the teeth but you seem to be on the right track with scaling and root planing keep up the good work

Can you eradicate it? If you mean, will you get rid of it, and it will never reoccur, the answered is no. It is a disease that once you have it, you will always have it. You can stabilize/maintain it, and keep it from progressing. So, that means you must work diligently at home and with your dental team to ensure you maintain optimum dental health.
You are on the right track, the non surgical periodontal treatment, coupled with good home care should put you back on the right path.

Yes. Make a solution of 1 tsp salt, 1tsp baking soda and 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide. Brush this into your gumline, 3 times a day. It will destroy the bacteria causing periodontitis. Maintaining this regimen will ensure this never comes back and will prevent most tooth decay. This is called the Keyes Method and is used to prevent these diseases in the third world where there is no access to dentists. It works.
