I have a stray dog running about in my neighborhood. It's a clean long haired mini pom or could be a long haired chihuahua. It's absolutely frightened and we have been trying to get it in our yard to hang onto until Monday, when the shelter opens again. Any suggestions on how to get the dog to get closer? She's in danger of running into a couple of major streets.

I have tried to lure it with food and dog treats, as I have a dog myself.

Our animal control isn't open 24/7. (I live right by it) The nearest shelter is about an hour drive away, it's a 24 hour emergency vet. The tossing food thing didn't work out. She just stares at me. Maybe if I cook some bacon!?

Frightened dogs can be really hard to catch. Some dogs will jump into a car if you leave the door open. You can try leaving your gate open and going outside your yard to try to herd it to go in by holding a big blanket between two or more people. The big problem is how horrible you'll feel if you're trying to help it and it gets hit by a car trying to get away from you. Don't feel guilty - sometimes there's just nothing you can do.

What if you tried putting a trail of treats from the edge of the road into your back yard? Go inside and watch, if she eats them wait until she is into the backyard and run out quietly and quickly to close the gate behind her. Put some more food and water out into the yard and a blanket so she can lie down. She seems to be terrified of people right now so if you hide it might work.

As an animal lover I would hate to see her hurt by a car or caught by someone who wouldn't do the right thing. Good Luck and try the cooked bacon, peanut butter, cookies and any other treats you have.

Animal Control is open 24/7. I know it sucks to see the puppy go to a public shelter, but it's better than getting run over by a car.

sit in the yard with ample food so as not to run out start by tossing little pieces far away and bring them closer as you keep tossing.....do not make any move for her till well beyond her taking it from you hand...this could take an hour or more so you will have to be dedicated and make not a single big movement....... like i said dont make any kind of a movve towards her till is eating out of your hand then very slowly while feeding her treat try to pet her( jsut pet_) after you are petting her and she is comfortable you mightt be able to pick her up... you have only one shot or it is another hour getting her to eat out of your hand again.... .be prepared to take a nip little dogs bite when a move is made.......gloves and long sleaves would be good... good luck and i hope this helped.

Can you lure it inside a fenced back yard with food? If it's been running loose for very long, odds are it's hungry. If you try to chase it in there, odds are you'll just scare it away, and it'll run anywhere to get away from you - including the busy streets.

Poor baby!! I have Chihuahuas and I hate to hear of them lost and alone like that, probably tossed out and abandoned. Try to give her some food. Get down lower to her level and keep calling her, not chasing her. Try to get several people to help try to catch her. I hope you can get her before she gets killed. I would take her in a minute if you lived close enough. I would hate to see her in a shelter.

sit quietly on the ground with FOOD. Don't move suddenly because most toy dogs are hyper critters. Talk softly when it comes near. Toss some food and maybe he'll come to you.

Hey, take it some time. It's not forever. I adopted a stray cat. At first, she was terrified at me. Until then i sat down quietly gave her food and talked to her softly until she became my pet. Anyways, just take it slow no need to rush. If you're nice all the time give it food fresh water and, and leave him to see what would he react. Hope this help..

Food is the best option. Dog food that smells. Other then that calling out to it but since it isn't yours i don't know how it will respond. Hope it all works out.
