If the odds are 5-1, and you win, you get back $5 for every dollar bet, plus your original dollar back, which is $6.

$5 X 5 + 5 (original bet) = $30.00.

In the question as it stands, a 5-1 with a payoff of $14.40 is not a 5-1 odds, but 6.20 -1 odds.. A two dollar bet returning $14.40 is 6.20 x 1, and for a return on a two dollar bet would render 6.20 x 1 (odds) and the return of you original dollar, or $7.20 x 2 dollar bet would come to $14.40.

So, a $14.40 return on a $5 winning ticket would be $6.20 x 5 + your original $5 or $36.00.

Odds of 5-1 determine the payout, and the payout determines the odds, the two are linked. 5-1 odds results in a $2 win wager payout of $12. And a $14.40 payout on a $2 bet implies 6-1 odds. So you are describing two different amounts. If the payout was 14.40, that means the odds were actually 6.20 to 1. This means on a $5 bet, the wager would return $36. If the odds were 5-1, then a $5 bet would return $30.

Jazil actually went off at 6/1 odds. With the payout of $14.40 to win, you would receive $36.00 on a five dollar wager.

24 dollars + ur original 5
if u got a 14.40 pay out that means that the actual odds were 4.80 / 1 but they rounded it up to 5/1

The answer is $36.

14.40 is for every $2 wagered.

So 14.40+14.40+7.20=$36...for a $5 wager.

5/1 is approx. $12.00. when there is a 1 after the number such as 6/1 you multiply 6x2 and then add your original $2 back. so 6/1 is $14. 9/5 is $9 for every 5 bet, so for a $2 bet you would get $4.80. 9/2 is $9 for every 2 bet. so 9/2 is $11.

Since 6 and 8 pay 6 to 5 for free odds, $10 works fine. If they allow you to put down $15 for free odds you will reduce the house edge a tiny amount.
