Your refering to when Christ said "Upon this rock I will build my church"
He wasn't saying Peter was a rock for Peter was a man and Christ is reffering to his Church - Christ's church which he is the foundation and the cornerstone.

Peter was NOT the rock on which the church was to be built, rather his confession WAS that 'rock.' In the Greek text, petros or Peter is a pebble, a bit of rock and petra is the confession or bedrock which was the foundation for the church.
It is common in the Greek language that where both masculine and feminine forms of the same noun root exist as here in petros and petra, the feminine is 'big picture' and the masculine is a small or individual part. The first obvious example in my Greek dictionary is agathopoiia and agathopoios. The first is a fem. form and means 'doing good' and the second, its masc. counterpart, means 'one who does good.' See 1 Pet. 4:19 and 2:14 where the 2 words are used.
Jesus built the church on the 'bedrock' of Peter's confession and NOT on Peter himself... Peter is a transliteration of the Greek word here. A true English translation would be Rocky... food for thought.

You really need a mommy to help you when you are online little child.
The real reason is because Peter was solid, he was a rock of truth and the foundation of the Christian religion.
Despite a previous uninformed poster, Dan Brown is not an authority on the Catholic Church.

No,whoremonger. Peter was called the rock because of his faith. Jesus knew that peter will be the one to start Christianity, therefore, the rock means foundation where Peter started it.

The context of that verse is Jesus is the Big rock that the Church will be built on and Peter is the little rock or helper to that end.

St peter was called the rock because the vatican, the center of the catholic religion was built on top of vatican hill where he was crucified. St. Peter's Basilica is in realtiy a large expansion of the original tomb of saint peter. The church was literaly built on top of saint peter, the rock. "I will build my church upon this rock" (Angels and Demons by Dan BRown)
