Yes, the sugar thing is true.
A few other weird things work, too:
1) Drinking with a pencil in your mouth (To release the air from your stomach or whatever)
2) Eating a spoonful of peanut butter. I don't know why this works, but it always does.
3) Holding your breath while standing on your head. Once again, a strange remedy but it's always worked for me!
4) Having someone all the sudden say, "OK, can you hiccup for me?" because after that, for some reason, you just can't!
5) Having someone scare you! BOO!

I'm not sure if it's true, but I've heard that too. Whenever I get the hiccups, I inhale completely, and then I swallow my breath. I do this three times in a row, and usually the hiccups are cured! You should try it!

This works for me every single time.
Drink a 6-8 oz. glass of water real fast all at once, then immediately take a deep breath, pinch your nose tight and hold your breath until you can't. Voila! No hiccups! Practice....I am 57 and it works every time.

this ones different but my family's always done it
take a pencil or straw and place it in your mouth sideways (so your biting down on the middle) and take a drink of water around the pencil. It has something to do with the way it makes you swallow.

It does actually. You are either acidotic or alkydotic, throwing your diaphram into spasms.
If the sugar doesn't work then you're alkydotic. Drink some lemonade made with REAL lemons.
That should take care of it.

Try holding your breath as long as you can, through a hiccup even, if it happens, it usually works for me.
OR
A spoonful of peanut butter usually works provided you aren't allergic to nuts

That works for me! Or you can plug your nose and swallow 3 times without breathing!

You know what actually works best for hiccups: swallow a spoon full of white vinegar...sounds weird but trust me it works every time.
