minimum commitemnt for anyone entering any branch of the military is eight years. This can be divided in to Active Duty, Reserves, Guard and Inactive Ready Reserve.

The Navy currently has Perform to Serve, which I believe is 15-24 months of AD service; the remainder followed by IRR time. Other enlistment contracts start at 4-6 years Active Duty, depending on the rate and time required for instruction.

They start kicking you out at any time past 20 years, although several people have gone 30 years or more, but they MUST retire by the time they are 65, regardless. Only ADM Grace Hopper was allowed to serve past 65.
