My daughter is 6 1/2 and most of her baby teeth are gone. The top front two are coming through but spaced out inbetween. Is that normal, or will it stay like that? If so, does that mean she will need braces when she gets older. Also, what age is appropriate to get braces if she needs them? Thank you.

boy, when those first permanent teeth start coming in - they look so bizarre on little kids- don't they? but believe or not- they usually grow into them. i would take her in to the dental office and have her looked over. it might be too soon to tell but often you can get a pretty accurate prediction of how things will go
usually kids go into braces at about 12 but my son went in to prevent a problem at age 9

6 1/2 is too young to have all her baby teeth yet. Kids have 20 baby teeth and I would think that your daughter has only lost about 6 - 8 at the age she is. Don't be too worried yet, spaces at this age are a good thing. Adult teeth are much bigger than baby teeth and as your daughter gets older and gets the rest of her adult teeth those spaces are more than likely to close. However, the few kids whose spaces don't close usually get braces around the age of 10-12. The average child has lost all their baby teeth by 12 and most orthodontic treatment commences at around that age.

Usually when you are at middle school, that is when you need braces, but some people get it when they are in 4th or 5th grade. I got my braces in 7th grade and got them taken out in 9th grade. When I was small, yes, my teeth was some crooked, some spaced, worst of all I had teeth like a rabbit wiith a big gap in the front of my two teeth. My dentist told me that it is normal and my teeth is still growing, but then my parents took me to a orthotodentist and he said I needed them. This took place when I was in 5th grade. Now my teeth isn't completely straight, but better than last time.

There's a lot involved in braces, you need to use special care in brushing, eat the right things, etc. So they probably wouldn't want to put braces on a kid before they're responsible enough.
She may grow into them too.
If you take your daughter to a dentist they will probably be able to give a good guess, so you can know whether to start saving up your pennies.
But if she doesn't need braces she'll need something else so you might as well start saving up those old pennies, anyway!

Let the kid have a life and stop worrying about her, sheesh you people and your quest to be perfect. Some guy in 10 years time might find the gaps between her teeth beautiful because it defines her as an individual rather than a manufactured look-a-like of all the other kids who got cosmetic fixes like braces!

Just wait until she is like 11 and see how her teeth turn out and then if they don't strighten up bu then you should get her braces. You want to make sure her teeth straightening process is over By High school as she will be older and more concerned about her appearence.

There is no hurry to make this decision...can't be done until they are about 12 anyway, so what is the problem. Relax, time will tell. Teeth get shoved here and there with all of them coming in. Genetics control the final outcome anyway.
