Invite his friends. Especially girls. Then leave them alone. Get good food like pizza and snacks. Get a playlist of music they like. Then just let them be awkward with each other. Thats the best thing at that age.

My son is going to be 16 in a few weeks. I would let him invite 4 or 5 friends over for a sleepover. If he has video games, let them stay up all night and play video games. Have plenty of pop with caffeine, and lots of snacks. Leave him alone with his friends and don't pester them all evening, he will be one happy 16 year old boy.

He is going to want a girl boy party with music, parents in seperate area of house and pizza.
I wouldn't do cutesy kids themes. He wants to be seen more as an adult.
The paintball thing is a great idea too.............so is the beach.

Decorate the party with something that he likes. Give him his favourite birthday cake. Give him his favourite game for a present.

Since it's summer I'd have a huge cookout and invite all his friends. Less mess to because it will be outside. Have burgers and hotdogs.
Music and whatever it is that 16 year olds do.

You can focus the party on cars...since he will be old enough for a beginners licence.
