when Jesus was still alive on the cross, Mary walked up to Him. Jesus then nodded to "the disciple He loved" and said, "behold your mother."
I've always been taught that John "the beloved" was this disciple.

John was the apostle who Jesus loved. John was very close to Jesus and his family. John knew Jesus best. When dying on the cross, Jesus said.....behold thy mother, Mother behold thy son. Mary's other children probably were not there, but back in Nazareth. The Lord knew they would need each other. John having no family and Mary losing a son. It was a traumatic time. He gave John a mother to comfort him. And gave Mary a son to hold onto in her moment of grief. Only rich ppl had tombs. The tomb was donated to the family by a friend of Jesus. I want to say Joseph of Aramathea, but i'm not sure. Some religions will have you believe that in offering his mother to John, he offered her to the whole world as our spiritual mother to be worshipped as a goddess. I believe it was far more human and basic than that.

Does anyone know why that a disciple took virgin Mary to their home and not one of her sons?
You have to study & understand the ancient customs of the day.
Jesus was the eldest Son. There for Jesus had to provide for his mother & family until they reached a certain point in life. in a day when there was no welfare or govt. assistance people had to make provision for there own. Since Josheph was dead Mary's
welfare was Jesus responsibility. Thats why he Had John provide for her as a son would.

Jesus Christ gave Mary to the Apostle John because Jesus had no brothers. Jesus was conceived through a miracle of the holy spirit. Mary was a virgin her whole life and only had one son: Jesus.

You can find your answer in the Gospel accounts of Jesus' death. While he was on the cross he looked at John and said, in reference to Mary, "This is your mother." And John took Mary home with him after that. Jesus trusted John to look after his mother. It was a kind of death bed request by Jesus of John. It was also an act of love on all their parts, and I suspect that it was honored by the rest of the family as well. ~ Peace & Blessings ~

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,"
27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Likely Joseph was dead and the Brothers of Jesus had not yet believed in him. Many feel it's the Apostle John because he is the only one to mention it.
