Great question!!

God did not flood the earth because the "level of sin" among mankind was high. Here's what the bible teaches. In Genesis 6, the "Sons of God" (I think that's what the King James says) had engaged in sexual intercourse with human women. The so-called sons of God were actually fallen angels (demons) who had physical bodies. The result was that the women were giving birth to a super-race that was half man, half angel. This is probably where the idea of mythical Gods (Zeus, Apollo, etc.) came from. If allowed to continue, there would be no pure humans left so God wiped out the entire human race ( and threw the demons with bodies into the Abyss) except for Noah and the handful of pure humans left. This was absolutely necessary so that the humanity of Jesus Christ could be born human and thus save the human race by his propitiation (payment) for our sins. As I said before, great question. Not well known in most Christian circles but it is basic Christian doctrine.

Luk 17:24 For as the lightning which lights up, flashing from the one part under heaven, and shines to the other part under heaven, so also shall the Son of Man be in His day.
Luk 17:25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected of this generation.
Luk 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it also shall be in the days of the Son of Man.
Luk 17:27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:28 So also as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;
Luk 17:29 but the day Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from the heaven and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:30 Even so it shall be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall be the coming of the Son of Man.
Mat 24:38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark.
Mat 24:39 And they did not know until the flood came and took them all away. So also will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Mat 24:40 Then two shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Mat 24:41 Two shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Mat 24:42 Therefore watch; for you do not know what hour your Lord comes.

Personally, I do not believe that the level of sin has changed. I don't think the world is any better or any worse than it has ever been. The only difference is that God said he would never destroy the world like he did in the flood again.

Considering we now have clonings and so many things that are probably very maddening to our Creator, perhaps now that you have brought it up on answers, we should all just be a little more aware of this. We should never underestimate the wrath of God & I am sure it is most possibly coming down soon, the way things are going and with what a lot of people in Western society seem to have no problem allowing to happen.

If you look around you, the level of sin now is the same as it was in Noah's time and it is far worse than it was in his day.

Here's what the bible says in Genesis 6: 1-7. This segment of scripture is short and there's an explanation at the end...

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repented me that I have made them.

Now, some believe that the "Sons Of God" referred to in this scripture are fallen angles. Angelic beings that fought on Satan's side and who lost the war. If I'm not mistaken, 1/3 of the angles of heaven sided with Satan. They are fallen and became what we refer to as demons. Anyway, my understanding of this scripture is that fallen angles found human women attractive and has intercourse with them resulting in offspring that were exceedingly evil.

Although Satan has not lost the war of the control of the earth yet, he will. The history has already been written and anyone that reads the bible knows the outcome (which is getting pretty close I feel). Anyway, Satan is very knowledgeable of scripture. He knows it better than any of us. And he has to know that he has lost. All he can do is prevent as many humans as possible from being faithful to Gods laws (old testament) or accepting the price the Jesus paid (new testament).

I suppose that's what he was doing during that time. Leading as many astray as possible. We're not told the exact sins that were being committed. I imagine a lot of homosexuality, sacrifice of children (which became Baal worship, they'd burn their kids alive to appease some false idol, etc.). There is also an indication of violence.

It had to be a pretty brutal and scary place for God to do what he did to clean things up.

I dont think that its necessarily worse just different. I would also tend to keep in mind with Christ dying on the cross and coming back it also gave those an opportunity to repent and to change there ways and find salvation which wasnt available then as it is now.

I think in today's society we are committing a lot of the sins were committed back then, (homosexuality, murders, abominations of any kind, etc) but I believe today's world is worse.

Well, turn that around and think about it. There wasn't much else to do back then, but think about how many ways a person could have sex. Then they wanted to reach god and leave the earth. So bored all they could do was rape and murder!

it is still the same, however, sin is now more acceptable---listen to the news---murder, rapes, theft, more accepting of sexual behaviors---behaviors that called for God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Still, God sees these evil but due to His promise-- not to destroy the earth with water he will not do so however, He does say the earth will be destroyed by fire. What type of fire? Think about the advances in science---Iraq for example---bombs will destroy with a type of fire.
