I have had ALOT of pets. The only way I know to handle this is whenever she does this, spank her with a rolled up magazine, newspaper, or flip-flop, something along those lines. I'm not saying to abuse her, but this really does work and it doesn't make them scared of you as some think it might. Just pop her twice good and that should do it if you stick to it. If this doesn't work, I'm sorry, but it always has for me and I have GREAT dogs and I love them all to death and they me. Hope this helps...

You should have started training her 3 1/2 years ago, but you can still improve her behavior on your own without the expense of a class or a professional trainer. You can't get a comlete class in these two paragraphs, but you can get a lot of info if you buy and read some really good books:
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on tv.
Put her on a leash (even in the house) and teach her to sit and stay. Then start inviting a LOT more people to your home - correct her with the leash if her behavior is unacceptable & praise her when she's being good and calm. The more she gets used to people coming in, the better she'll be. Teach her not to bark after you give her a command like "hush" or "quiet". Show her that you are secure and in control.

If your dog jumps on people to try to protect you, you already have the advantage becuase the dog obviously considers you the alpha and wouldnt want to upset you. Be aware of the strength of your disapproval, and use it to you advantage. If the dog knows this upsets you, she wont want to do it as much. Let her know that its not ok with you.
Also if you get the dog outside of her territory (home) and help her be more social, it would probably be good for her.

whenever she jumps on people, spray her with water. You could reward her when she is good. These are minor things that you can do, but with little money, your options are limited. If you have enough money you could get her a barking collar from the pet store. They shock her if she barks.

When my dog was around that age she did that sort of thing to. She was kind of defending me, but also she was just excited. Give your dog some time, and if she doesn't get better then dog school would be good.

get a good book on dog training and spend at least one hour per day working with your dog. Also, socialize your dog. Take your dog places and expose him to lots of people.

If you don't have enough money for the daily care and unexpected things that go along with a pet, then you should not have one.
Obedience classes do not cost much, check your local petsmart.

This website will really help you out- read it all.
http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm or go to the messageboard on petfinder.org and provide more details.
-BTW don't ever hit your dog as punishment. You'll only make her fear your hand, cause confusion, and increase the chances of being bitten.
