both

depends on how you look at it, however you must not confuse religion with christianity. the difference is christianity is following Christ for what he has already done on the cross, whereas religion is mans attempt to reach god by some kind of works program. Jesus and the Bible gives us guidelines and guides us on our path, but the decisions we make are ours by our god given free will. Does religion cause trouble, i don't think so, it is our rebellion that causes us to not receive all that we could have in Christ. We have the choice to do what is right or wrong. WE CAUSE OUR OWN PROBLEMS AND TROUBLES>

Well both, but religion is man made so you would expect it really, the idea was to help others, but then mankind took over rewrote the bible and used religion to scare everybody in to following there way quoting things from the bible if you didn't fall in line. Just look and see how man has gained from the writings of the holy books around see how rich he church is, but has God gained from this NO, instead you have the church telling you what to do, and what about those con artist who take 10% of your income for their church, and people are stupid enough to believe is, but look at the leaders see how rich they are.

Billy, I believe that, religeon can be a blessing or a curse. People who become religeous finatics, are like someone with "tunnel vision".
They can't see "the big picture", or view life in any other context. That is definitly a curse. If you believe there is a higher power, or a heavenly being who wants to help us in time of trouble and unhappy life situations, then it is a blessing.
There is so much more information relating to this subject, it is difficult to explain, without knowing more about your thoughts on the subject.

religon causes all the wars then pats its self on the back for helping people that it did not need to help if it did not start the war in the first place

Well, many laws and common values originate from religion, but taking any religion to the extreme is always unsafe. What you've got to understand is that religion is one of those things that can be created and used for the good of the community, and also to manipulate people, and there's a very fine line in between.

I think it really depends upon how man desides to use it and where his heart is truely at. There are good hearted people out there who are religous and practise what they say they believe. There are others who simply use religion to achieve their own agenda, not Gods. There are many religions out there however and have caused many upon many wars seeding man against his brother. Christianity in its truest form is meant to bring man kind together. Sadly man has managed to corrupt that with their hunger for power and money. I would say religion helps give people purpose in life and man uses it to cause trouble.

Just causes trouble. Think of a war that didn't have anything to do with religion.

Depends on how you use the religion. It's usually a good base for moral values but some take it to the extreme then you have planes crashing into buildings.

Religion does nothing but divide humanity and cause trouble.

Religion is man's way of understanding who and what God is. People tend to group together with others of similar back grounds and beliefs.

The problem is every culture from the dawn of civilization has defined and worshipped God in a different way. Each one perfectly certain it is the ONLY way to please God.

I was raised in a "holiness pentecostal" atmosphere and we were regularly taught, even as children, that everybody other than us were going to hell. This is where the "religion" becomes a problem.

I remember when I was about 8 years old a traveling evangelist visiting our church for a week-long "revival" meeting. In one of his sermons I remember him telling a packed and excited sanctuary full of "saints" that Jesus was coming soon. I remember his, with palpable emotion in his voice, telling a rapt audience that many VERY good baptists will be left behind. He went on to list SEVERAL other sub-divisions of the Christian faith who would also be left behind.
He expressed undeniable glee that WE knew the real truth and many others who THOUGHT they were Christians, but were baptized wrong would be doomed to go through the tribulation and burn in hell if they didn't figure out the REAL truth. Later on this preacher told us that it was our duty to tell everybody we come into contact with what the REAL truth was.

I became overwhelmed with sadness in that sermon. I remember feeling a grief of the loss of nearly the entire world. I was a child. I didn't want the rapture to ever happen. Not for fear that I would be left behind, but for the majority of the world who would burn in eternal damnation.

I couldn't sleep. I prayed and cried all night. I begged god to understand that different people found him in different ways. That preacher made me feel RESPONSIBLE for the salvation of the entire world. I can't describe the sadness I felt.

Very early in the morning I believe the REAL god helped me understand something that gave me peace of mind. As an 8 yr old I suddenly understood "for god so loved the world..." I understood that God was there and understood humans and humanity better than we did and that anybody who looked for god would find God... and no one group had the "market" on god.

After studying the Christian faith my entire life... as a participant, observer, then critic, I know and understand the "Scripture" better than most ministers. I no longer claim to know who and what God is. I know for certain that if we put all the truth from every known religion together into one place, it would not equal one percent of the vastness of who and what god really is.

Religion is just a cultural definition and method of worship of God.
I'm pretty sure God looks at each of them and is honored by the uniqueness and individuality each one of them expresses. God is everybody's God. "For God so loved the WORLD,..." Not for God so loved the pentecostals, or baptists, or methodists, or Christians, or Hebrews, or Gentiles, or

People went to the trouble of making a plethora of RELIGIONS based on the worship of Jesus, but each of them limit God to "just their image" of Him.

God cannot be limited by human understanding of him. It is blasphemous to even think that way.

Damn, this ended up being a book. Sorry so long. And wouldn't you know it... the one time I write a really long post, the spell check is having problems. Sorry for any bad spelling.

It does both. Religion can give a person faith and make them want to keep living, but it can also ostracize certain people for their beliefs and even cause people to kill "in the name of God".
