Yes! Geneology is becoming quite the popular hobby these days and there are tons of websites and organizations to help you out.
To get started, I suggest you go to this site: http://www.familysearch.org/. Just enter in the info about a deceased family member that you know about (your great-grandpa, for example). There are billions of people in the database from everywhere in the world, and if your known relative is in there you should be able to get information about his parents, his parent's parents, and so on.
Next, if you're doing a lot of research, get a program to help you keep track. You can download Personal Ancestral File (a program that lets you store the names, birthdates, and other important information about your ancestors, and print off helpful family-tree-like charts) for free from this website: http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10151&categoryId=14000&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=13669&level=2&bcname=Software%20Downloads%20-%20Free&top=Y&resetCat=N&replBC=subcatlist13669&retURL=. If you prefer to keep simple, paper records, you can print off family charts here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/Welcome/frameset_information.asp?GPage=../../Search/RG/Guide/PedChart.asp&APage=how_do_i_begin_a.asp.
Finally, if you are really serious, consider finding a family history library. These libraries have records (such as tons of military, census, and religious records from many different countries on microfiche) and supplies (like trained librarians and microfiche readers) that can really help your search. They will have the best information about how to find data on deceased relatives in different countries. Here are some family history centers in England: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp?PAGE=library_fhc_find.asp. They're run by the LDS (Mormon) church, but they're there to help anyone and they won't try to convert you or anything. If one of those isn't nearby, try checking out your yellow pages or do an internet search.
Good Luck.

Yes. Germany will probably be easier than Russia, since the breakup of the Soviet Union has made it very difficult to trace anything. If you speak Russian or German, you can do some work yourself, but if you don't you may have to rely on the work of a researcher, as both Old German and Russian are difficult to read. The Cyrillic alphabet (Russian) looks quite unlike ours and the Alte Deutsche alphabet bears only a passing resemblance to modern day German.
You might find help at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints -- otherwise known as the Mormons, who, in Salt Lake City, Utah, have one of the world's largest geneology libraries.
Good luck!

All you need to find out about is swabs. There is a way of finding out where you are from just by handing in swabs of your saliva. Check it out.

You may find it useful to google Geneology.com or try Ancestry.com or Geocities.com or just Google your last name and see what you may discover. Or you could try and see how many relatives you can find in your local library too!
The possibilities are endless! Happy searching!
It is fascinating to discover who your ancestors are and what they did!
