Dogs, just like male cats must always be marking their territories They leave their scent behind so that other animals know that this is theirs.

Because they can smell wherever the car has been and is just marking it's spot.. But they can smell on the tires just like they can smell on your pants and shoes, however, they know it's not ok to mark on you..hehe..most do anyhow

a chemist, suggest is a generally overlooked possibility? I suggest it is the smell of the rubber itself, from which the tire is made. Man-made rubber is derived from a host of laboratory chemicals, any number of which may appeal to the nose of a dog.

It is a way of marking their territory. Many animals use this method of getting their point across.
