this is why i ask...
she act's mighty suspicious!
she's too clever...
we have witnessed her virtually having cat with a magpie, whilst the magpie helped itself to the dogs food...
does my dog have friends whilst we are out... just a thought... she is an ali!

The reason she looks so smug when youn return is that she knows she is on to a good thing; you've been to work, she's been to sleep.
All she has to do is act pleased to see you (and she probably genuinely is) and then she'll get fed and will be the centre of attention.
My dog definitely had his own social life when he was let out alone. He would visit all the neighbours and get fed by them all then refuse to eat the canned dog food we gave him.
My mother's dog, back in the 1970s, used to get on the bus by himself and travel across the city. He knew where all the family worked and frequented the pub that some relatives ran. He could find his way home from anywhere.

NOT NECESSARILY IN THIS ORDER: .............
pull the grill door down, and haul out the grill pan, and lick the somewhat greasy rack.
steal an empty and washed out crab shell, and demolish it, along with a glass vase at the same time.
stay away from the broken glass.
sleep
bark at the slightest noise of someone walking past on the pavement, some 30 metres away.
bark when the phone rings, and get too excited, so wreck the kitchen - again.
sleep
if left for too long, pee on the floor
WHEN THE OWNERS COME BACK:.................
Bark
Wag tail, then remember what I did ages ago, so put tail between legs, and wag in a cute way. Lowering of ears optional, but usually provokes more sympathy.
Lick owners
Sleep.

If it is a puppy or young dog, you can expect to have something chewed up. And it will not be the cheap house shoes, OH no, it will be those $120.00 pair of dress shoes.
If it is longer than a few (like 3 or 4) hours you can bet you will also find that they have left you a monument. And it will probably be right where you will step in it, BEFORE you see it.
If it is an older dog, they will probable sleep the entire time you are out.

We didn't know which of our two dogs were ripping the seats to pieces when we went out so we set a camcorder up.
We found the culprit, but also she just sat staring into the hall barking like mad after she had done it.
No one came to the door there was no sounds only her barking.
She doesn't do any shredding of furniture now we have moved.
My other dog sits by the front door waiting for me to come home, even when there is someone else in the home with him.

I read about a bloke who thought he was losing it. He kept coming home from work to find he'd left the fire on. The room would be boiling, with his dog stretched out in front of it wearing a happy grin.
He reminded himself to turn it off, he double checked and when he got back the fire was on with the dog stretched out in front.
Eventually he got hold of a video camera. Within minutes of him leaving the house, the dog went up to the electric fire and turned it on by poking it with his nose. He ended up having to unplug it every morning.
So if you're really curious set up a webcam and you can see what your dog gets up to. But most dogs just sleep.

Set up a hidden video camera so you can find out for sure! I once knew an Akita who would spread out his dog food and lie in the back corner of his kennel, just so he could watch the birds come and eat it. Not to chase them, just for his own amusement. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't see it.

Eat the furniture, tear down the fence, chew up the carpet, gnaw on the woodwork, and howl until the neighbors call the SPCA. What does your dog do?

They take out their two way wrist radios and make plans with all the other dogs in the world to take it over and make us sleep at the end of the bed, chase things they throw and bring them back so they can throw them again and to make us go out side to pee

I know our Dog goes and lays down on our bed, and sleeps there until it needs to go to the loo, then she finds herself in our living where she emptys herself, then returns to the bedroom! Little monkey!! (well actually she's a dog!!!)
