sometimes, when it comes to depression, we need to talk it out with a therapist/shrink or whatever you want to call them. it helps. i used to go to a few and i'm not ashamed of it. don't worry. it'll pass.
are you a Christian? i know what got me out of my depression and negative outlook on life, as well as my cutting, was asking Jesus into my heart...just some advice. i hope it helps.

I have lived a life of depression myself. I am currently 20 yrs old and have suffered from depression since 4th grade. Start by talking to friends or family, than get a counselor to talk to. I found that talking to someone that you don't know and get to know after a while helps. All the information said between you and the counselor is confidential and can't be released to anybody but you. That what I like about counselors. Another thing would be to see your regular doctor or a psychiatrist and start up on some antidepressant pills. Counseling is a good way to help with depression but you may need more than just that. I need the medicine as well as counseling to help me with my depression. Hope this is of help to you. If would like anymore advice let me know, and I would be glad to help you out.

Speaking as chronically depressed my whole life there is definitely hope! There is a lot of factor's which contribute to depression such as genetics's, PMS, life's circumstances etc. The way I have managed my depression is thru exercise and medication. You have to make sure to get a qualified doctor, to get the proper medication. Its something I don't always want to do, take my meds or go for a run, but if I don't do those things I pay the price. I feel hopeless and tired. I hope this helps, just remember, you can manage this illness, its taking those initial steps to get you feeling better. Good luck

Why not? You should continue to go even if you dont want to, it will help you a great deal to see someone and talk why you are feeling the way you are. You have to be patient in time you will get better. You also may not have found a right fit with your psychologist and that may be the reason why you dont want to go, you may want to check around and find someone who is a good fit for you, but please dont give up. It will benefit you greatly to speak with someone and to find out why you are feeling the way you do and to cope with it you may also need to be on medication to help you along better while in counseling whatever you and your psychologist feels is best for you. Just dont give up.

Are you taking any anti-depressive medications? You said you had gone to a psychologist, did he or she recommend you to see a counselor or a psychiatrist about your depression? How long have you had depression? Has it been going on for a long time or did it just start?
Make a appointment to see your family doctor and tell him or her what you are feeling. Your family doctor may be able to help you more effectively than your psychologist did.
You may need both a counselor and medications to help you ease your symptoms of depression. No doctors are mind readers. They rely on their patients to tell them everything. Be as honest with your feelings as you can be. It will only benefit you in the long run; but being dishonest with your doctor won't help you out at all.
Acknowledge what is making you so depressed. This knowledge could help you and your doctor determine what treatment is best for you. Also acknowledge your happy moments in life and your accomplishments. By focusing on the positives of life can also boost your self-esteem and help you to think of more positive things than concentrating on the bad stuff. Share this info. with your doctor as well.

Exercise/sports - I know its probably the last thing you want to do, but I can guarantee, once you have had some form of workout, you feel a damn sight better. Especially if you try to focus on your issues whilst exercising and use it to 'fuel' your body. Exercising releases 'feel-good' chemicals into your brain which is why post-exercise you feel good. Do this three times a week and you will feel a little more positive :). I fell into a 6 month depression period recently, and it took all of my willpower to get me to start a gym routine. Now I feel much more refreshed mentally - its not a cure but a step forward.

Well, I'm extremely depressed, and even though I go to my psych regularly, I don't feel like he's really helping. A good tip would be to do what I do: talk to EVERYBODY that you can, (friends, family, online people, whatever) and see what their opion is! This strategy hasn't helped me, but that's probably because I've only been doing this for the last week or so.

A psychologist will only try to talk you out of your depression; a psychiatrist OR a family doctor will talk to you AND prescribe you some mood stabilizing medications to help you thru this.
