Nitrous oxide, few deep breaths and you'll know why they call it laughing gas. However women giving birth tend to swear a lot and shout, I can only assume they are given something else.......Lol!

It is Nitrous oxide. This gas is for people, who shouldn't get strong anaesthesia. It decreases the pain, but it is often used for people who are afraid of injection. Actually, no anaesthesia art is good for health and every chemical given to the body is a risk for health, but pain is a problematic thing. Sometimes, anaesthesia becomes necessary, because high pain can cause shockes or blackout.
Laughing gas is used often by the dentists because of injection phobia.

Laughing gas is known as nitrous oxide- nitrogen combined with oxygen.

Medicinally, it is used as a pain killer or an anesthetic. When inhaled, it induces a feeling of euphoria, which is why it's called laughing gas.

It is also used in cars as an oxidizing agent, commonly called "nitrous", or NOS, to improve performance in internal combustion engines.
